My Background

I’m a saxophonist based in North London. As well as performing I currently teach saxophone and clarinet at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. I trained to be a teacher of the Alexander Technique to overcome injuries to my shoulder and back. I now teach the technique at the Royal College of Music and privately at home and have given masterclasses on the technique at the Royal Academy of Music and the Grieg Academy in Bergen.

The Alexander Technique is a great way to learn to use the body more mindfully and is an excellent treatment for chronic back pain, repetitive strain injuries and performance anxiety. In the longer term it is a wonderful way of rediscovering freedom of movement and emotional balance as we cast off the habits that tie us up in knots!

“Without James' combined expertise in the Alexander Technique and comprehensive command over the saxophone, I have no doubt that my playing career would have ended with a shoulder injury back in 2012. Through his deeply profound and philosophical approach towards the relationship between my psyche, physiology, and performance I have been able to manage my injuries with life-changing concepts that I utilise every single day. My playing ability and tonal production soared to new levels alongside the improved body awareness, and my personality reaped the rewards of a more relaxed and mindful approach to everyday life. In short, James' teaching provided the first steps towards finding what the full potential of my musical and physical condition could be.”
